These materials are produced through our educational nonprofit.

A Study in Contrasts with Competitors

Various recruiting firms that serve nonprofits seem to provide similar services, because the visible elements of recruiting have certain standard milestones: meetings, resumes, interviews and references. Below the surface however, there are huge differences in the reach, rigor and analysis of different search workflows. Incentives for recruiters to proactively seek out truth and reveal it to clients can also vary widely. Such incentives are influenced by how searches are managed and how tools are deployed.

Recruiting platforms and other software have systematically enticed recruiters away from investing in context-specific analysis of candidates and their accomplishments. There is scant person-to-person intelligence gathering anymore, and it is far easier to show clients only the most conveniently engaged and charismatic candidates. Verification of candidate expertise implied by a resume’s content is disappearing. Finalists are increasingly advanced based on how they present. Candidate pools lack depth, turnover rates increase, and over time nonprofits suffer both financially and operationally.

m/Oppenheim mostly relies on human observation and intel, person-to-person outreach and marketing, observations of candidate performance gathered from the field, a sophisticated and constantly evolving network of experienced leader-advisors, and multiple deep dive cross-referenced interviews with candidates to check on the ability of each to deliver desired outcomes.
